Famous Last Words

This one has already been proven a blunder:

"There is no reason for any individual to have a computer in his home." -- said in 1977 by Ken Olson, founder of Digital Equipment Corporation (www.snopes.com/quotes/kenolsen.asp)

Let's wait and see how this one fares:

"E-books are a growing niche for now, but I certainly don't see a time when everybody will be reading them. People just love what the traditional book represents to them." -- Michael Smith, head of the International Digital Publishing Forum, which tracks e-book sales

I do agree with Smith that readers love what the traditional book represents. I certainly don't think ebooks will ever completely replace traditional books, but I do believe that the ebook phenomenon will continue to grow. The cost of ebook readers is prohibitive to all but early adopters, and not everyone owns a PDA, Treo, Blackberry, or iPhone. It's awkward to pop open a laptop on a crowded bus or train. Like VCRs, DVD players, and the like, ebooks will be more widely read when the cost of ebook technology goes down.

The Snowball Continues To Grow

The ebook movement continues to snowball. I discovered while perusing Google News that Penguin, the international paperback publisher, will be publishing ebooks along with their paperback releases. Penguin also plans to eventually publish its entire back catalog in ebook format. Read more at http://gizmodo.com/379141/penguin-to-launch-ebooks-alongside-regular-releases

More and more public and college/university libraries are offering ebook holdings. I have checked out ebooks at the UTSA library. I haven't checked out the San Antonio Public Library's ebook holdings, but I have done a little research and was pleased to find that most public libraries offer their patrons ebook alternatives.

In my preparation to premiere my ebookstore in the fall, I am noting that authors still do, of course, prefer to have their books in paperback or hardback versions. While I will offer paperback versions of my better selling ebooks, I plan for my business to be primarily an ebook publishing venture, and I will push hardest to market my books in ebook format. I really believe that this medium is here to stay, and will grow into a major publishing force in the years to come.

If you haven't tried reading an ebook, I highly recommend it. Of course, I encourage you to read the books for sale at my soon-to-open ebookstore, but in the meantime, check out some of Debi Staples' offerings at www.synergebooks.com. She's got some great stuff to read!

Happy eBook Reading!
